Oftentimes known as “Mr. Saginaw”, “The Hat Man”, or “Mr. Gus Macker,” Wilbur Hoffman was a longtime downtown Saginaw businessman. He was a strong advocate, supporter and active leader in downtown Saginaw.
Wilbur began working at Schaefer Hat Store in 1946, after serving in the Army during World War II. He became a partner in the business in 1960 and purchased the business in 1963. He continued to operate the store in downtown Saginaw until his death in 1998.
Wilbur took pride in the business knowing that quality merchandise, customer satisfaction and personal service was of utmost importance. For many years, Schaefer Hat Store was the largest men’s hat store north of Detroit.
During his years as a downtown businessman, Wilbur was a member of PRIDE (Positive Results In a Downtown Environment.) He led fundraising efforts to purchase Christmas banners and decorations for the downtown area. The 7½ foot high decorations were first displayed in 1985.
In 1998, Wilbur contacted Scott McNeal, creator of Gus Macker basketball. After countless telephone calls and personal visits with Scott, he persuaded McNeal to bring the tournament to Saginaw. In 1989, the first Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament began in downtown Saginaw. For 10 years, thousands of people would gather in the downtown area for a weekend in early June to watch and play basketball. In his determination, Wilbur helped to provide something for an entire community.
Wilbur Hoffman received the Spirit of Saginaw Award, an authentic log mark, from the Saginaw Chamber of Commerce in 1990. In accepting his award he said, “I want to make downtown a better place to work and live in.” He has been described as a selfless leader, giving a generous portion of his time and talent for revitalizing and beautifying downtown Saginaw. Over the years, his contributions have improved the quality of life and economic growth for Saginaw.
Wilbur Hoffman died on November 14, 1998 at the age of 78 years. He was survived by his wife of 50 years, Arlene. He also left 3 children, Nancy Hoffman Borchard, Mary Hoffman Sheets, David Hoffman, and 4 grandchildren.
